Ladies and gentlemen,

Many years have passed since 1972 when we waged a ceaseless battle to recover the city of Quảng Trị. It was there that so many lost their lives in the old fortress citadel of that city built on hills stretching along the South bank of Thạch Hăn river.
Almost four decades have passed and it is now 2010, yet the fierceness of that battle still lingers in my mind. Today, I am very honored to stand in front of you all as one of the last, living witnesses of the many battles won and lost on soil occupied by North Vietnamese Army. It is with great pride, and perhaps greater sadness, that I recall my 21 years as a soldier of South Vietnam. And in those two decades of warfare, I cannot remember a battle more fierce and bloody than the battle to regain Quảng Trị. How do I relate to you all the real story of Quang Tri: what it was like to endure ground zero of that fierce, bloody battle.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Communists initiated Campaign Nguyễn Huệ. At noon, March 30th 1972, the NVA mobilized over 10 Infantry divisions, a thousand tanks, heavy artillery, and rockets to launch simultaneous attacks on three tactical zones; I, II, and III Corps of the South VN. All three advancing columns were blocked by the strong resistance of the ARVN (Armed Forces of the Republic of VN). About the First Corps, at the beginning, the NVA sent five infantry divisions, two armor regiments, two artillery regiments, one anti-aircraft artillery regiment and other units from the B5-Front (the communist Military Command operating in the two most Northern provinces of South Vietnam i.e Quang Tri and Thua Thien). Such as: Infantry, Artillery, rocket and sapper made up another division. After 30 days of fierce and bloody fighting on both sides, on April 22nd 1972, when the defensive line of the 3rd Infantry Division and its reinforcements retreated to the City of QT and then at the morning of the 2nd of May1972, they forcibly fled Quảng Trị province to the South in maintaining their own forces for a counter-attach later. With this in mind, the NVA could not resist pursuing the 3rd Infantry Division.
The area of responsibility of the 369th Brigade was now pressed hard from the North. The Tactical-Area-Of-Responsibility of the 369th Brigade was the district of Hải-Lăng South west of the city of Quảng Tri.
n  Facing imminent danger in this situation, the subordinate units of the 369th Brigade start to execute the preplanned defense line. The 2nd and the 9th Battalions managed to retreat to the South bank of Mỹ Chanh River. They crossed the My Chanh River five hours later. A platoon of Combat Engineers was ordered to destroy the My Chanh Bridge. The struggle on the night of the 2nd of May 1972 was a matter of life and death - it was a sleepless night wet with blood, sweat and tears, as finally we strove to complete the defensive line in readiness for the confrontation. Our very survival depended on how quickly we deployed.
n  On the 3rd of May 1972 in the early morning USMC Major Bob Sheridan, adviser to the 369th Marine Brigade, with a serious expression on his face, addressed the Brigade Commander:
n  “Sir, everybody else has retreated to the South. What do you think of our Brigade?” Answer: “We will not be moving anywhere, we will stop the enemy right here. And with the help of your fire support, not a single NVA soldier will cross this river.”
n  “Sir, take heart, as you are the man with the strongest firepower behind you in this area today.
n  “What do you mean?”
n  “I have received orders that you are to have at your disposal all 30 sorties of B52 stratofortress, the tactical aircrafts and naval gunfire from the 7th Fleet, and air support from airbases in Đà Nẵng and Thailand. All you have to do is tell us where you want to strike.”
n  It was at the My Chanh River, that the greatest and most momentous battle took place. Cited below is an excerpt from the report sent to the USMC headquarters regarding the 369th Brigade's activities written by Major Robert Sheridan, the American Brigade advisor. “The Brigade did not allow any unit to stay in a place longer than 36 hours. In the month of April, we moved the position of the Brigade Headquarters 21 times.” Bob Sheridan's account of the shelling also read: “The enemy opened the most devastating artillery barrage that the Brigade had ever received. We thought the whole world was falling apart around us. Our vehicles, bunkers,  and guns were being demolished. We wondered if anyone would live to fight. All we could do was dig deeper - and pray.”
n  The advance of the NVA was stopped on May 3rd 1972. The My Chanh River became the defensive line between North and South Vietnam and from where we would later launch a counter-attack to recover Quang Tri.
About NVA side:
After they succeeded in capturing Quang Tri City, the NVA built a deep defensive line. The city and the old citadel  Đinh Công Tráng were occupied by a NVA division reinforced by tanks, a sapper regiment, and enormous artillery and rocket firepower. Four other divisions took up defensive positions around Quang Tri. At La Vang Church to the West, along the coast in the East, along the Thach Han in the North, and close to our own My Chanh defensive line on the South bank of the river. The last two NVA reserve divisions (320 and 325) were moved to the South of the Bến Hải river (DMZ).

Recovering Quang Tri:
n  At 1:00pm on May 5th 1972, a helicopter landed at the 369th Brigade Headquarters in the Phong Điền District of Thừa Thiên province located at the Southern of Mỹ Chánh river about 7km. A surprise visit by Lieutenant General Ngô Quang Truởng who introduced himself that he was just assigned by the President Thiệu to replace Lieutenant General Hoàng Xuân Lăm as Irst Corps Commander.
n  On the 28th of June, at 7:00am, ARVN forces advanced from the Line of Departure (the My Chanh) towards Quang Tri city. The Airborne Division reinforced by the Armor Brigade and Ranger groups, moved up North along Route 1. Their TAOR (Tactical Area of Responsibility) extended left to the far west. The Marine Division, also reinforced by tanks and reinforcement units, had a TAOR extending from the east of Route 1 to the sea, naval forces patrolled the coast. Further to the sea there were some ships from the 7th Fleet of US Navy. They were to provide naval fire supports on request. Aircrafts were to give firepower as the need arose.
The segment of highway from Mỹ Chánh to Quảng Trị was about 15 km long. It was considered by our forces as “15km of Blood”. The NVA had built strongholds and fortified bunkers rigged with booby-traps surrounded by mine fields. They were protected by heavy artillery batteries and sophisticated rockets. The Airborne Units had to destroy these strong points and bunkers to advance. After 10 days battling in unfavorable conditions from all aspects, the Airborne and Marine forces took over the road, and closed in upon Quang Tri City. As mentioned before, the city was defended by a NVA division reinforced by tanks. The Citadel was held by a regiment and a sapper group.
Within the vicinity of Quang Tri City, the enemy strongholds were much denser. The ARVN had to fight hard every inch of the way. They had to resort to hand to hand combat, bayonets, and hand grenades to gain ground. Advancing units would gain 100m only to be driven back. And still they advanced, and still the enemy resisted. It was a deadly tug of war that went on for days. Around the clock attacks were launched by both sides.
Seen from a distance, the sky above Quang Tri was filled with dust and smoke. The noise of bombardments, shellings, and gunfire created a fearsome thunder. It was as if Quang Tri was shaking from a grave earthquake. The ground literally shook beneath our feet.
The Battle of Quang Tri has been ranked as one of the world's most ferocious and most bloody confrontations. Professional military critiques go so far as to say that the ferocity of the battle was indescribable. According to one Marine Platoon leader, “getting wounded was so easy. Just raise your hand out of the bunker holes, and you would be riddled with bullets.” For about 75 days in an area of 15 square kilometers, about ten divisions from both sides battled under a rain of artillery.
To win a battle, the attacking force usually has to be three to five times the size of the defending army. But at Quang Tri, the enemy defending outnumbered our attacking forces four to one, and were four times as powerful. It was a miracle that we won. We had placed honor before all, thus
we enjoyed a psychological advantage.
As the battle was being fought, the world's eyes watched closely. Regardless of the spectators' sympathies, the outcome was undeniably great. After Quang Tri, the ARVN was considered one of the best armies in the world.
At 12.45pm on the 15th of September 1972, the Marine Corps completed their mission - they recaptured the old Citadel, the last target in the Quang Tri battle. Two small yellow flags carrying three red stripes were raised by the front line units of the 258th and 147th Marine Brigades. They flew proudly on either side of the main gate. Quang Tri lay in ruins. Not a single inch of ground lay unfurrowed by shells and bombs. Everything was scarred, and most of the city lay under rubble.
The official flag-raising ceremony took place on September the 16th, 1972, witnessed by Marines whose eyes brimmed with tears. Quang Tri was finally theirs.

The Aftermath of the Battle of Quang Tri:
Congratulatory telegrams and letters from famous generals of the Allied nations poured into Vietnam. The President, the Senate, and the Congress of the Republic of Vietnam held a joint session to inform the people of the victory. Quang Tri was to the ARVN what Iwo Jima was to the US Marines. The fame of the battle surpassed the limitations of the war fought to ensure freedom for the South. In the days following the victory, several military delegations came to study the lessons of this battlefield. Among them, was the French delegation, led by General Vanuxem. After listening to the number of casualties on both sides and standing in the midst of rubble, the seasoned French general fully appreciated the ferocity of the battle, he stood upright and raised his hand in a military salute and said: “I admire Brigadier General Lân and all ranks of the Vietnamese Marines.” This, from the man they called ”The Grey Tiger of the North VN” back when the French and  Viet were at war from 1945-1954. He continued: The generations to come cannot mention Quảng Trị without recalling you and your Marines. The Marines and you carried out your duties and achieved your goals beautifully.”
North Vietnam could not achieve the political objective as the international promises and was dealt a painful defeat in the Summer of 1972. Another three years would pass before North Vietnam could recuperate and execute the final invasion of 1975. Although I hope my re-telling of the heroic efforts of the South Vietnamese forces to regain Quảng Trị has brought to life once more that epic battle, I am here today to share with you this one important truth: we need to move away from the narrow perspective on the war that has long been propagated by the North Vietnamese Communists. We should not view the Vietnam War as an American war of aggression, or worse, a war “the noble Communist fought against the American and the corrupted South”. Such anti-war propaganda and half-truths are simply lies that have been used to paint the South Vietnamese people and the ARVN in a negative light.
The displaced people of South Vietnam, and I was one of them, only ask that you strive to maintain a balanced view of this conflict that has shaped all of our lives. For now, North Vietnam may be considered the winning side in their view of short-sighted and self-serving historians. But time will tell... it always does!
And in that sense, the four decades since the battle of Quảng Trị are nothing compared to what I believe, in the end, will be the enduring and true history of the Vietnam War that future scholars and historians will undoubtedly one day record and pass down to the coming generations. The truth is this: the Vietnam War was fought for the sake of a country by a people who still long for their homeland, and who wish in their hearts that the truth can finally be told about the heroic sacrifices made by Allied Nations, American and Vietnamese soldiers to ensure freedom in a small country, half a world and a lifetime away from where we are today. I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude and appreciate to all of VN War Allied nations, American and Vietnamese Veterans, especially to the families whose sons, grandsons, brothers, and husbands so bravely laid down their lives for the cause of freedom and democracy in our native country VN will remain with us forever.
